Susan Collins studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (as a Fulbright scholar) and completed a Ph.D. in 2001 (exploring the role of the viewer in the realisation of the work).
Since 1993 she has worked mainly with site specific installation, often in the form of interventions in a range of public spaces.
Her Public/permanent projects include a collaboration with architect Sarah Wigglesworth on a Classroom of the Future which received a Royal Society of Arts Art for Architecture award and pixelscape, a permanent commission for Arts Council England South East completed in 2003. She is currently working on a range of other commissions including a permanent installation for the new University College London Hospital.
Solo shows include: Suspect Devices 1997; In Conversation 1997-2001, shown in Brighton, Amsterdam, Helsinki, Cardiff, and Berlin, linking viewers on the internet with pedestrians on the street; and Transporting Skies 2002, a networked exhibition shown simultaneously at Site Gallery, Sheffield and Newlyn Gallery, Penzance.
Tate in Space was commissioned as a net art piece for Tate Online in 2002 and nominated for a 2004 BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Award). She is currently working with Film and Video Umbrella (UK) on Fenlandia, an online landscape project based in Britain’s Silicon Fen.
