Jesus Macarena-Avila
has MFA degree from the Vermont College of Norwich University and studied in the fiber, painting and sculpture departments at the School of The Art Institute, where he earned his BFA.
Macarena-Avila has obtained a high level of artistic accomplishments and experiences exhibiting his work in the United States and internationally including Australia, France, Mexico, South Africa, Senegal, Spain and Zambia. Publications such as Art Throb, Dialogue, Gravy Magazine, New Art Examiner and El Portaliano/ Fundacion Diego Portales have highlighted his studio work and community art projects.

Macarena-Avila has lectured at several educational and arts institutions such as: Antioch College (Yellow Springs, Ohio); Australian National University (Canberra, Australia); Columbia College Chicago (Chicago, Illinois); Community Arts Project (Cape Town South Africa); Northern Illinois University (DeKalb Illinois); Victoria University (Melbourne, Australia); University of Missouri at Saint Louis (Saint Louis Missouri); Victorian College for the Arts (Melbourne,
Australia) and Witswander University (Johanessburg, South Africa).

Macarena-Avila has been a recipient of several awards, grants and residencies including a fellowship with the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop (New York New York); artist residencies with Greatmore Studios (Cape Town Sotuh Afrcia) and UCross Foundation (UCross,
Wyoming) and awards as well as grants such as the International Governor’s Award (Illinois Arts
Council), Neighborhood Arts Program Grant (City of Chicago), and Chicago’s Boy & Girls’s Community Volunteer Award.

In Chicago, Illinois, Macarena-Avila works as a community based arts educator with many social service organisations. He serves as a faculty member with the Art Education Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Liberal Education Department at Columbia College Chicago. Macarena-Avila is the co-founder of POLVO, an alternative cultural space promoting contemporary art in Chicago.
