Don Gray’s earliest inspirations came from the landscape of his birthplace in rural northeast Oregon. The realist paintings that resulted helped train his eye and hand in traditional techniques.
Today, Gray takes a much more spontaneous approach to his art. Exterior observation has given way to interior search. A painting is begun like a random walk in the woods, with no idea where it might lead. Along the way, free association and unexpected discoveries are encouraged. The paintings become artifacts of an intuitive process, not literal representations of pre-determined ideas or images.
Don Gray has been painting professionally for nearly thirty years. In recent years he has begun exploring digital artmaking. He has exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States, and his works are found in many collections, public and private. Gray has also taught,
painted indoor and outdoor murals in several states, and illustrated over twenty books. He lives with his wife, Brenda, in Murrieta, California.
