Brendon Bussy is a South African musician, researcher and electro-acoustic sound artist.
In his work he utilises a range of traditional and new media – primary tools include acoustic instruments such as the Mandolin (which he plays), Audiomulch (realtime audio processing software), and a field recorder.
His electro-acoustic works often result from the basis of research. In 2003 he released Diesel Geiger (Open Records). The content of the album documents a journey taken between the East and West coasts of South Africa and is shaped by Durbanâ€™s traditional Zulu Maskanda music and Cape Town urban culture.
In 2005 he created CMYK for the South African Unyazi international electronic festival. The work is based on an optical artwork Sieve by sculptor Paul Edmunds and was created for live performance with Audiomulch and Mandolin. This electro â€“ acoustic work explores the nature of colour â€“ as we physically perceive it as well as itâ€™s electromagnetic nature.
During 2005 he helped design wind activated â€˜flute resonatorsâ€™ for artist Ralph Borlandâ€™s Jetty Square Sharks in Cape Town. As the life size sharks of this permanent public installation rotate in the wind, the resonators moan. Extensive recordings of these resonators resulted in a work for headphones designed to be listened to whilst viewing the sharks.
Current work involves documenting the history of urban locations through the process of recording resonant found objects with contact microphones. A work based on recordings of rail track is to be featured at the 2007 Vancouver based Signal and Noise festival.
