Bio: Monica is a new media artist based in Connecticut who graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design’s Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program in Digital Media.
Her work is inspired by her travels to China and the Philippines where she interviewed her surviving ancestors and documented daily life in her nomadic family, examining the social hierarchies and gender roles that vary in each generation. She also investigates the health-seeking habits of Asians and Asian-Americans as they negotiate the shift from traditional healing to the clinical practices of modern medicine. Her findings culminate in multi-media installations and audio works that can be found in both gallery spaces and online.
The submission “Economy of Daughters†integrates interviews, prose and sound to create a compelling audio narrative that examines how the artist’s cultural roots shape the economy of the daughter.
