Martin Desloovere
was born in Gent (Belgium) in 1963 and is still living and working there. He studied English Literature & Linguistics and Dutch Literature at the State University of Gent. During his studies he started making theatre with a group of fellow students: Theater De WAANzin still exists, performing in its own little theatre space and frequently taking part in international festivals, where several productions have won the group numerous awards, a.o. for plays (in English and Dutch) that Desloovere wrote for the group.
In the early 1990s Desloovere worked as the head of educational projects and as assistant to the dramaturge at the National Theatre in Gent.
In 1994 he set up his own touring theatre company & educational theatre organisation Theater De Verwondering, working as a director, writer, dramaturge, designer, technician, etc. Over the years his interest in sound art, installation art, video & photography has been leading to an increasing presence of those media in his theatre productions, recently resulting in separate activities and projects within those fields as such, presented under the banner/moniker Rite of Wondering.
