SIP – SoundLAB Interview
I am a multi-media artist specializing in sound art and installations inspired by the sonic potential of natural objects and ordinary processes. Using technology as a mediating device, I transform the data generated from natural and manmade processes and objects into sound. In this way,
sounds that are hidden inside of roadways, mountain ranges and financial indexes can be “unlocked” and made audible. My work highlights the incessant acceleration of technology and media, and our interaction with the waste these processes produce. As a performer, I incorporate numerous musical disciplines and utilize diverse instrumentation and techniques, including re-purposed devices, tape destruction, feedback, process pieces and computer generated sounds, as well as more traditional
instrumentation. I have performed in Los Angeles and the west coast for more than a decade at numerous venues including Spaceland, The Echo, and the 2005 CEAIT festival at the REDCAT theater in Disney Hall. As both a solo and group performer I have shared the stage with such esteemed artists as Devotchka, Jeremy Drake, mem1, The Midnight Movies, Christian Ristow, O.S.T., and The Secret Machines. In 2006 I had the distinct honor of receiving a multi-year grant from the Creative Capital
Foundation for CALLSPACE, a collaborative sound installation that highlights inaccesible spaces.
