I8U – Montreal/Canada

i8u’s audio art can be qualified as “sound-sculpture”. It reveals powerful, opaque and complex sound environments where analog and digital meet. Her Web art can be said to follow a parallel path, enter twining both musical and visual elements. i8u ‘s musical path is rather special. From classical music to the blues, it took only one chance meeting with David Kristian to get her involved in electronic music. I8U has participated in various music and new technology festivals across Canada, Europe and the US, such as Silophone (Montreal, 2000), Mutek (Montreal, 2001, 2004), Le Festival de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville (2002), Ver Uit de Maat (Rotterdam, 2002), SEND + RECEIVE (Winnipeg, 2003), Les Digitales (Bruxelles, 2004 )Club Transmediale (Berlin, 2004) as well as a soundtrack by Bubblyfish and I8U for the movie Swordswoman of Huangjiang / Huangjiang Nuxia presented at the Film Society of Lincoln Center¹s Walter Reade Theater Festival : Heroic Grace : The Chinese Martial Arts Film. Her CDs have been released on Canadian and European labels such as bake /staalplaat, Oral, Piehead Records. A release on the Mutek label includes a collaborative piece with Goem (Amsterdam) and recently, she took part in the compilation ‘ 60 Sound Artists Protest the War ‘ on the japanese label ATAK. She regularly presents solo performances and often collaborates with Martin Tetreault, David Kristian and Magali Babin. i8u’s particular interest in music, sound and Web art allowed her to produce her first Web art project, Obstacle, which was presented as part of Peripherique, a laboratory curated by Nicole Gingras and created in collaboration with the Groupe Intervention Video (Montréal, 2001). I~ S Ãœ was presented at the Musee du Quebec in the fall of 2002 in the context of the Web art exhibit ‘ Ellipse ‘, curated by Valerie Lamontagne and included 5 other Canadian artists. Median (2003), is an interactive piece created in the context of a Web art residency at LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE. I8u¹s latest Web art project, Gate, is part of the exhibit curated by Mobile Gaze. Gate was launched this past April in Montreal as well as in Toronto at the Images Festival.
