I am a South African artist working in oils(contemorary abstract), video art/ stills, new media – digital photography and mixed media.
This exhibition is of particular relevance to me as an artist and a woman. I turn 40 yrs old in July 2006 and this is a particular time of reflection, the seeking of new meanings in old, discovery and rejuvenation, finding sure footing in a continual state of flux. As an artist, a mother and a woman, I am immensely affected by the cruel world we live in. It reflects in my work and my stance as a human, a societal creature. I am a woman i wear a mask” is a direct reflection of my inner feelings about current issues, war, grief and a sense of belonging. A woman is a survivor, a mother is a warrior, an artist is a magician, a conjuror trying to put together the pieces of daily life using the vision of art when our own eyes fail us. I wear a mask, you wear a mask, we all wear masks… this for me is a time of reflection; an attempt to see behind the mask. both my own and those firmly implanted on the face of the world. A mask is a mechanism for protection.
