David Clark is a media artist and filmmaker interested in experimental narrative form and the cinematic use of the internet. He has produced art for the internet, films, and gallery installations.
His most recent works are large-scale interactive narrative works for the web. ’88 Constellations for Wittgenstein (to be played with the Left Hand)’ is a series of 88 interrelated interactive Flash animations that create an experimental portrait of the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. ‘Sign After the X’, a collaboration with Vancouver artist Marina Roy, is an encyclopedic experimental work about the letter X. He is known for his net.art project ‘A is for Apple’ that has played at over 50 festivals and venues around the world including the Sundance Film Festival, SIGGRAPH, FCMM in Montreal, EMAF in Osnabreuck, Transmediale in Berlin, and the Museum of Moving Images in New York. It won the ‘Best in Show’ at the 2003 SXSW Interactive Festival in Austin, Texas and First Prize at the FILE2002 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
He is also the director of Meanwhile, a non-linear film, developed at the Canadian Film Center that recently won the interactive multimedia fiction award at the Cinema Tous Ecrans, in Geneva Switzerland; and the feature film Maxwell’s Demon. Other new media work includes the net.art pieces Likewise, Riddled with the Stinx, and the installation Chemical Vision. In 2005 MICA Galleries in Baltimore mounted a survey show of his work. He also writes and curates video and new media.
He has received numerous awards and grants from SSHRC, The Canada Council, Telefilm, Harold Greenberg Fund, and the Ontario Arts Council as well as the first MTT/Nova Scotia Arts Council New Media Prize (2001). He currently teaches Film and New Media at NSCAD University in Halifax.
