Interview for SIP – SoundLAB Interview project

Mikhail Karikis is a London-based sound artist and performer with a background in architecture and visual art. He exhibits and performs in the UK and internationally. His music has won in international competitions and been selected by Björk and Graham Massey for commercial release.
Recent work includes ‘369 Villages – Memorial Service’, a collaborative performance with Oreet Ashery for London’s international live art festival ‘PSi 12: Performance and Human Rights’ commissioned by the Live Art Development Agency, East End Collaborations and Queen Mary University, (The Great Hall, June 2006); ‘Hum’, a sound-work for ‘The Colour of the City’ (Sung Nam University, Korea 2005); ‘The Shape of Breath’, a video projection (The Photographers’ Gallery, London 2005); ‘Once More in CoF Minor’, a composition for an international music release on the album ‘Army of Me’ (Björk, Unicef and One Little Indian Records, 2005); ‘Sightings of Domestic Wildlife’, an audio-visual composition for “Synch”: Electronic Music and Digital Arts Festival (Athens, July 2005).
Forthcoming work includes Mikhail’s solo album to be released by Sub Rosa (February 2007); a performance at Whitechapel Art Gallery (November 2006). Mikhail Karikis completed his doctoral thesis, ‘The Acoustics of the Self’, at The Slade School of Fine Art (UCL) in 2005. He lectures on sound art and performance at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, Middlesex University and other institutions.
