He graduated in the Course of Visual Arts of ESAD. João Pombeiro has showed regularly since 1998 and has taken part in several national and international group shows. “Looking for Freedom” and “International Intrigue,” Rosalux Art Office, Berlin, stand out of his recent solo shows.
“Like various contemporary artists, João Pombeiro makes use of movie classics – such as Hitchcock for his video work. His minimal and discreet intervention suits a time in which the ‘cultural consumer’ intends to re-interpret, intervene and shuffle the cards. One could almost speak of a ‘revenge’ of the consumer. In “International Intrigueâ€, the various levels of interpretation are multiplied by the surprising combination of the various languages normally available on DVD. The video questions the standardization of culture and tastes but also the invisible frontiers of every language, its hermetic character, its inalienable particularity and the mystery of its sound. João Pombeiro works with various media (painting, installation, video, design). In all of them, there is an irony of refreshing simplicity”. (Tiny Domingos)
