While studying music theory/composition at the Music Conservatory
of Caracas, Dr. Jesus A. Lopez received his BSc (Hons) in Electronics
Engineering from the Simon Bolivar University (Venezuela) in 1997,
later, his Ph.D. in artificial intelligence and machine learning from
the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, in 2003 and his
postgraduate certificate in education PgCUT from the University of
Ulster, Northern Ireland, in 2004. During that time he exhibited
several installations and performed with a number of experimental
bands. In February 2000 he joined the School of Information and
Software Engineering at the University of Ulster as a part-time
lecturer. At the same institute he took up a position as Research
Associate in 2003 and subsequently became a full Lecturer in the same
year. He has being associate editor in the Proceedings of the
International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and an invited
editor for the IEEE Transactions’ series. He is also an active member
of a European network for knowledge exploration in science and
technology (COST 282, computational creativity arm). His research
interests are in, computational creativity, biological complexity
applied to music, and medicinal effects of music. He has published
over 30 scientific articles in artificial intelligence and biological
journals but his current research interest is on modulating feelings
by using discontinuities in musical landscapes.
