Garth Erasmus
Visual artist / musician / instrument-builder.
Born 1956 in Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape.
Since the early 1980s in Cape Town, Garth has been part of the establishment of many art groupings, including Vakalisa and Thupelo Workshop, and helped establish the Greatmore Street Art Studios. He has exhibited extensively both locally and abroad and his work is especially represented in the Smithsonian Museum of African Art. Since the mid-1980s his work has focused on his Khoisan (indigenous) ancestry, and has subsequently opened up to a world of music, sound and instrument building which has become central to his art. Since the late 1990s he has been part of Khoi Khonnexion, a group well known for bringing together indigenous instrumentation, poetry and improvisation.
