Sonic and visual artist Carl Palme (b. 1977) researches on the cultural
impact of the digital turn. Carl did his masters in media studies about
the DVD as key to a new understanding of digital film and culture. Lives
and works in Berlin.

work
title: The Player Is The Instrument: etude pour lecteur DVD
year: 2009
duration: 5 min. and 9 sec.
statement:

10 years ago the rapid hacking of DVD Video, a brandnew format at that
time, indicated the arrival of a new digital era.
This work is trying to perform another hack with DVD Video.

It all began during the debugging of a sophisticated DVD game. I
discovered overwhelming features of set top DVD Players. Certain
programming of the disc resulted in a unique audible output. I do not
speak about the ordinary electric output, measurable through jacks and
plugs. I discovered the DVD player as a solo instrument that creates
sonic waves.

Characteristically the act of playing the instrument is split in two
parts. The programming of the disc (diachronic) and the possible
interaction using the remote control while having the disc in the DVD
player (syncronic). The specifications and condition of the machine
itself i.e. the box, the drive and the electronic parts of the DVD
player define the sonic peculiarity of the single machine as an instrument.

Very similar to a punch card organ that can not play without a card, the
DVD player will not work without its disc. Knowing that it comes from a
film projecting machine the sound of the DVD player will typically
remind listeners of the 35mm film projector sound. On the one hand the
latter probably is a culturally deeply embedded sound that comes to our
minds quickly in case a soundtrack to the film is missing. On the other
hand and despite all differences concerning analogue versus digital, the
playing technique still is based on rotation, which explains sonic
similarities. Anyway the sonic monotony an the smoothly irregular rhythm
let us drift away imagining… interrupted by someone pushing the open
button on the remote control, which results in a big bang, a reboot of
the system.

All sounds appearing in the work are created by one single set top DVD
player. Everything was recorded in two mono channels using a cymbal and
a voice microphone. The DVD machine was placed on a wooden stand as a
natural amplifier. The final piece is a mix of three life recordings of
the DVD player performing with one disc – a DVD Video game including
advanced scripting. The only human interaction is pushing the open button.

”Etude pour lecteur DVD” is a first approach to understanding DVD
players as instruments. The work does not exhaust the range of sounds a
DVD player can create.
.

Alexander Schubert
www.AlexanderSchubert.Net

Alexander Schubert was born in 1979 in Bremen and studied computer science and biology in Leipzig focusing on neuroinformatics and cognitive science. During his studies he has worked as a musician and composer in a variety of different environments. In addition to this, Schubert worked for one year at the ZKM (Centre for Art and Media) in Karlsruhe at the Institute for Music and Acoustics. Since 2007 he has started a degree in multimedia composition at the Hamburg Academy for Music and Drama.
Schubert’s research interest explores cross-genre interfaces between acoustic and electronic music. Musical pieces for audio tapes and the formal notation of compositions for live electronics belong just as much to his work as the design of software-setups and manipulation / design of instruments for an intuitive handling in an improvised context (see “Weapon of Choice”). A permanent focus of his work is the combination of notated and improvised music — both in aesthetics and structure. His technical training is the basis of a differentiated utilisation and individual design of sound synthesis and controllers (e.g. in the installation “A Set of Dots”).
Apart from working as a composer and solo musician Schubert is also the founder of the ensembles “Schubert-Kettlitz-Schwerdt” (for improvisations solely based on noises) and the electronic trio “Trnn”. The formation “Ember” (saxophone, drums, piano, electronic) mainly realises minimal, poly-rhythmic pieces that are a mix of free jazz and contemporary chamber music. Schubert has contributed to a variety of different projects as a musician, composer and programmer (e.g. for the “Wiener Festwochen”, Staatsoper Berlin). Alexander Schubert curates the music festival contemporary electronic music in Leipzig and runs the publishing company “Ahornfelder-Verlag” for experimental audio and book releases. In 2009 he was awarded with a Bourges residency prize. His works have been played for example at: ICMC Montreal, SSSP Leicester, Klangwertage Hamburg, ZKM Karlsruhe, SMC Porto, Ahornfelder Leipzig, Bipolar Festival, Blurred Edges Hamburg, Disparate Bodies Festival, Headphone-Festival, Komponistenforum Mittersill, Maribor Slovenia, Hilltown Festival Irland.

Bio

Hsiao-Lan Wang, a native of Taiwan, composes extensively for
orchestra, chamber ensembles, solo instruments, and electronic media.
Her music investigates the fundamental elements of musical
communication through new timbral, formal, and technological
relationships. Notable recognition from various national and
international awards includes Pauline Oliveros Prize and Libby Larsen
Prize from International Alliance for Women in Music, Athena Festival
Chamber Music Composition Competition, American Composers Forum,
Pierre Schaeffer Computer Music Competition (Italy), Craig and Janet
Swan Composer Prize for Orchestra, Composers Competition by Chamber
Orchestra of Denton, Awards from ASCAP (American Society of Composers,
Authors, and Publishers), Logos Foundation (Belgium), Bourges Electro
Acoustic Music Festival (France), and Dutch National Radio. Ms. Wang
is also a frequent participant at music festivals throughout North
America.

In addition to her career as a composer, Ms. Wang extends her musical
platform to conducting of orchestral, choral, and contemporary chamber
music. Given her special interest in contemporary music, she has
continuously conducted works by both developing and established
composers of our time, including numerous world premieres. She has
served as the associate conductor of the Nova Ensemble at University
of North Texas and the Flower Mound Community Orchestras.

Ms. Wang received her BA in Music Composition and Theory from the
National Institute of the Arts (Taipei, Taiwan) in 1999 and MM in
composition from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2002. She
is presently a DMA candidate in composition at the University of North
Texas while teaching music technology and composition courses at
Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana. Advocacy for women’s
music has been an area where she devotes much of her energy in recent
years. She currently serves as the president of International Alliance
for Women in Music.

She has worked from a specifically female consciousness and sensibility, building a body of work that is fragmented and antilinear, one that exudes poetic irony and finesse, balancing itself on the fine line of indifference and invisibility, intimacy and aggression. She lives and works in London and Lisbon. She studied Sculpture in FBAUL (Lisbon, PT), and is a MPhil/PhD candidate in Fine Art (Studio Based Research) at Goldsmiths College, London; and was awarded a grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Mendes Silva is a Research Assistant at the University of Évora, and teaches in the Landscape Architecture degree since 1999.

Born in Lisbon, Portugal, 1966. He works in Lisbon and Oporto.
Graduated in Arts, Paulo Mendes is a visual artist, curator of exhibitions and producer of cultural projects. Founder and member of the cultural association PLANO 21 (www.plano21.net).
He has been exhibiting his artwork, both individually and collectively, since the early nineties, having curated several independent and institutional exhibitions in the last twenty years that promote the development of a new generation of Portuguese creators. His work is characterized by the contamination between several fields – cinema, design, architecture, music, theatre, dance -, and by the diversity of media which each project determines – painting, drawing, photography, video, installation and performance. He also engages in work in the editorial and graphic design areas. His production takes on strong contours of political affirmation, generating resistance to the normalized models of reception. By addressing social reality, the author takes on a deceptive and interventional stance and thwarts the expectations of the spectator. Art, in Paulo Mendes’ view, should be characterized by its criticism and through forms of comprehension capable of generating discussion and resistance to the systems of power: “Art should be a space for discussion, not for exclusion.”

(Leiria, 1979). Lives and works in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal.
He graduated in the Course of Visual Arts of ESAD. João Pombeiro has showed regularly since 1998 and has taken part in several national and international group shows. “Looking for Freedom” and “International Intrigue,” Rosalux Art Office, Berlin, stand out of his recent solo shows.
“Like various contemporary artists, João Pombeiro makes use of movie classics – such as Hitchcock for his video work. His minimal and discreet intervention suits a time in which the ‘cultural consumer’ intends to re-interpret, intervene and shuffle the cards. One could almost speak of a ‘revenge’ of the consumer. In “International Intrigue”, the various levels of interpretation are multiplied by the surprising combination of the various languages normally available on DVD. The video questions the standardization of culture and tastes but also the invisible frontiers of every language, its hermetic character, its inalienable particularity and the mystery of its sound. João Pombeiro works with various media (painting, installation, video, design). In all of them, there is an irony of refreshing simplicity”. (Tiny Domingos)

He has exhibited in one-man and group shows regulary, presenting video, sculpture, installation and drawings since the late nineties. Of special note among his recent solo shows are: “yupi” (Museu de Arte Contemporãnia de Serralves, Porto, 2003), “yeah” (Centre d´Art Santa Monica, Barcelona, 2003), “Bacteria” (Galeria Filomena Soares, Lisboa, 2005), “Angelo Mai” (Ex - Chiesa San Romano, Roma, 2005), “o dia em que troquei fazer tudo por não fazer nada” (Lisboa 20 Arte Contemporãnea, Lisboa, 2007), “já viram alguem levar um tiro e não deitar sangue” (Lisboa 20 Arte Contemporãnea, Lisboa, 2009) e “Meathaus” (Museu Bordalo Pinheiro, Lisboa, 2009).
“Francisco Queirós (Lisbon, 1972; lives and works in Sintra) is one of the most exciting figures on the present Portuguese art scene. His output is defined by the use of video and the creation of installations that build a visual universe which is easily recognisable for its strangeness and singularity.
At an early stage, the works were based on the construction of narratives related to the world of children, but subverted by perverse actions borrowed from the world of adults. His latest works defend an iconographic and space-time ambiguity to better hint at an atmosphere of ambivalent sensations”. “Francisco Queirós” by Miguel von Hafe Pérez
